Know your neighborhood
Abbot Kinney's 'Venice of America' opened July 4, 1905; most of the original canals were paved over in 1929, leaving six — Carroll, Linnie, Howland, Sherman, Eastern and Grand. The Canal Historic District landed on the National Register in 1982. Locals split hard between 'the Canals' and the boardwalk, and the distinction is political.
