Sawtelle grew up around the old Soldiers' Home and became a Japanese American nursery community — by 1941 the stretch of Sawtelle Boulevard held 26 nurseries. Families were forcibly removed to Manzanar in 1942; Hashimoto Nursery and Yamaguchi Bonsai carried the history forward after the war. The 'Little Osaka' nickname was an outsider coinage longtime residents never asked for.
