The water tower by A1A really is painted like a beach ball, and it is the town’s whole flag. There were two once; the 1951 tower inland at Bluesten Park came down in 2013, so the one over the sand carries it alone. The name is Luther Halland’s, son of a Swede who worked Flagler’s railroad, and the city only made the Beach official in 1999. Gulfstream Park has run horses here since 1939 and the Florida Derby since 1952. Bottom edge of Broward; the county line is the southern border.
