The peacocks genuinely own the streets and traffic waits for them. The whole village is a designated bird sanctuary, under half a square mile, fewer than two thousand people. In the Sherwood Forest section there is a real Tequesta burial mound, the first archaeological site Miami-Dade ever preserved, and it reads today as a quiet grassy knoll. The Little River runs the edge, and in the cool months the manatees come up it.
